This Costa Street prefab was erected in 1946 on the site of some serious wartime damage. My family moved in to this exact one (in the bitter winter of ‘46-‘47) when it was brand new. It was a pleasant, modern home for a young family. Our neighbours to the left (prefab now replaced by a house) kept chickens and gave us eggs. I like to imagine this rather sad prefab with its profusion of mulicoloured comos in the front garden, towering hollyhocks and golden rod along the sides – exactly as my parents left it in the summer of 1953.
thanks for that comment stuart, that's amazing! i was down on lordship lane a few weeks ago and there's one there that pretty much still fits that description - lots of sweet peas, runner beans and roses in the garden. wish i'd taken a photo. sadly there's also one next door that's totally derelict
